Whilst the agricultural ministers are meeting in Brussels on Tuesday 26th March to discuss, among other burning issues, the responses to be given to “current concerns in the agricultural sector“, Copa and Cogeca sent a letter to take a stand on the announcements made by the European Commission on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) at the end of last week.
The letter sent to all European agriculture ministers yesterday sends a clear message for the proposals put forward by the European Commission. Copa and Cogeca “support the European Commission’s proposals for mid- to long-term simplification of the CAP presented on 15th March as a step in the right direction which safeguards the transition to more sustainable agriculture.”
Copa and Cogeca believe that “by adopting these changes, there will be more flexibility in implementing the policy in a way which considers the pedo-climatic and local conditions and specificities across the EU.”
Still, the European farming organisations are asking for a few clarifications and fine tuning on certain elements, notably on GAEC requirements, a faster procedure for revising strategic plans and exemptions for farms of less than 10 hectares.
