Simple measures to keep bird flu out
The #NoBirdFlu campaign promotes five simple biosecurity measures that can help prevent the introduction and spread of avian influenza, especially on small farms and among backyard flocks:
- control access to farms
- maintain effective cleaning and disinfection routines
- prevent contact with wild birds
- keep poultry SPECIESA subdivision of the genus, a species is a group of closely related and similar-looking organisms; for example, in the case of
Homo sapiens (humans), the second part of the name (sapiens) represents the species separate recognise signs of disease and act early.
“Bird flu prevention starts with everyday biosecurity. #NoBirdFlu helps turn scientific knowledge into simple actions that farmers, small flock holders and veterinarians can apply before the virus reaches the farm,” said Nikolaus Kriz, EFSA’s Executive Director.
“As migratory birds cross Europe, the risk of avian influenza increases. Bird flu does not stop at borders. By working together across Member States and sectors, we can help reduce the risk of outbreaks and protect animal health, food production and livelihoods,” said Claire Bury, Deputy Director-General for Food Sustainability at the European Commission.
Why now?
Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects poultry and wild water birds. Outbreaks can devastate poultry populations, disrupt supply chains and harm farmers’ livelihoods. They can also have an impact on public health.
Bird flu cases in Europe typically rise during the winter months when migratory birds travel across the continent. Between October 2025 and June 2026, almost 8,000 outbreaks were detected in Europe. Detections in wild birds were four times higher than in the previous winter. On poultry farms, most infections came from indirect contact with wild birds. This underscores the importance of applying strong biosecurity measures to limit introduction of the disease from wildlife and farm-to-farm spread.
Campaign toolkit
A toolkit that includes a range of communication materials is available to help campaign partners share the practical measures that will reduce the spread of bird flu on farms. Translations of the materials in all EU languages will be made available. They include:

posters with visual reminders of key actions to integrate into daily routines
a video showcasing the key measures farmers can take to help keep bird flu out
ready-to-use social media materials, including posts and stickers, to help spread the message within farming communities and beyond.
