Today, European farming organisations Copa-Cogeca, FNSEA, FDSEA67, and Jeunes Agriculteurs (JA) staged a Flash Action in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg to protest the European Commission’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and CAP reform unacceptable proposals.
40 tractors lined the streets with some 200 farmers from across Europe to send a clear message: the Commission’s plans threaten food security, rural development and the future of European agriculture.
The mobilisation highlighted the Commission’s decision to dissolve the 2 – pillar CAP in the Single Fund, which farmers warn will result in a loss of commonality across Member States and a breach of the Single Market, increased complexity and administrative burden, less predictability for farmers, and a direct threat to rural competitiveness and food sovereignty. At the same time, the significant budget cuts that bring agricultural support to less than 15% of total EU expenditure are completely disconnected from today’s economic, social, geopolitical and climate realities.
50 MEPs from across the political spectrum joined the action, reaffirming their commitment to a strong, common, and properly funded CAP. The turnout demonstrated growing political opposition to the Commission’s approach, with MEPs refusing to endorse proposals that undermine agriculture’s strategic role.
A 6-meter red line, symbolising the Commission’s oversteps, was deployed in front of the Parliament, reinforcing the slogan: “Our food security is at risk— MEPs don’t accept the unacceptable!”
MEPs and Member States must not allow these flawed proposals to be forced through. An alternative is both possible and necessary — one that respects the individuality of the CAP, its two-pillar structure, and that secures a dedicated, inflation-proof budget, staying true to EU treaty provisions.
