This afternoon, the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture will vote on its position on simplifying the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). While the EPP Group welcomes steps towards simplification, but warns against sidelining the CAP in the proposed long-term EU Budget. The EPP will not support any attempts to cut resources or dilute the distinct identity of agricultural policy by merging it with other instruments.
“Farmers need support, flexibility, and legal certainty – we urge the Commission to stop sending mixed signals. With one hand, it promises to cut red tape, while with the other, it pulls the rug out from under CAP in the EU’s long-term budget. Good intentions will lead nowhere if CAP disappears,” says Dan-Ştefan Motreanu MEP, the EPP Group’s lead negotiator on this file.
“We will continue to fight for a smart, strong, well-funded, and truly common CAP that strengthens farmers’ position in the supply chain. This means cutting red tape, protecting direct payments to farmers, driving innovation and generational renewal, guaranteeing fair market conditions, and ensuring adequate support for rural development,” Motreanu added.
The EPP Group’s message is simple: cut the red tape, reduce the burden, and let farmers farm. Simplify, simplify, simplify!
