Did you know that every 10 years, since the late 1960s, European statistical offices collect information from every farm on their structure and activities? From the land to the animals and labour force, there are more than 350 questions on the Agricultural Census, which paves the way to know more about the structure of the EU‘s farms, what they produce and how, who manages them, and who works on them.
This major statistical exercise allows us to compare Member States’ situations and see their evolution over a long span of time. Because it is a significant endeavour involving 9 million farms and focuses on such an important subject to people, it is the focus of the ninth episode of the Eurostat podcast series Stats in a Wrap.
The host Jonathan Elliott is joined by Helena Ramos, team leader in the Agriculture and Fisheries Unit, and Johanna Slaets, head of Agricultural and Forestry Statistics at Statistics Austria, to discuss the details of this census. This includes what kind of data is collected and how; and how it fits in EU objectives, specifically the Farm to Fork strategy, part of the EU Green Deal, which sets specific targets for EU agriculture, food security, sustainability and environmental aspects.
