Geospatial Analyst for the Department 4. Pests/diseases Diagnostic and Monitoring Collaborative Laboratory “InnovPlantProtect – Association”
We are looking for a passionate and resourceful candidate able to integrate into an ambitious organization aiming to develop innovative products and services to protect crops against pests and diseases.
Candidates should have self-motivation, curiosity and passion for applying geospatial analyses to plant protection in agriculture and for developing practical and manageable decision support tools for practitioners.
Main responsibilities:
• The candidate shall report directly to the Director of the Department of pests/diseases monitoring and diagnostics and will have the following responsibilities:
• To carry out remote sensing analysis of drone/satellite imagery using open source software or services such as Google Earth Engine;
• To apply spatial statistics to spatial datasets integrating open source GIS software (QGIS) with R and/or python, ensuring data documentation (metadata) and data quality check throughout the process;
• To present the outcomes of the spatial analysis in clear and high quality maps;
• To identify the relevant data sources to support the work when data are not directly available or collected from the field;
• To participate in fieldwork to monitor pests or diseases in Mediterranean ecosystems;
• To interact and collaborate diligently intra and inter departmentally;
• To prepare reports, presentations and, when requested, purchase orders accordingly to InPP´s established procedures.
Specific requirements:
• PhD qualification in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology, Geography, Agricultural Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science.
• Demonstrable skills to work with one or more of the following tools: QGIS, GRASS, GDAL, R, Python, SNAP, Google Earth Engine, OpenDroneMap, Pix4D.
• Experience in spatial statistics, environmental and ecological modelling.
• Experience in drone and satellite data acquisition, pre-processing and analysis.
• Familiarity with Linux environment.
• Demonstrable problem-solving skills, self-motivation, open and curious mind, aptitude at learning.
• Good communication skills with both technical and non-technical staff.
• Ability to work independently, while enjoying working as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Good written and spoken level of English.

InnovPlantProtect aims to create innovation for the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products through:
• Development of innovative technologies and knowledge creation, as well as improvement of existing technologies for crop protection;
• Applied scientific research to create novel intellectual property developed technologies in the market, and to develop processes and products;
• Provide technical support to public or private companies and entities, assisting them in the introduction of biotechnological strategies, methods and processes, and in the orientation and implementation of industrial research and development, directed towards the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products;
• Collaboration with (inter)national public and/or private institutions, in their areas of activity.
Workplace
The work location will be at the headquarters of InnovPlantProtect, situated in INIAV (Elvas), at the former National Plant Breeding Station.
Salary and contract
A full-time uncertain term contract will be offered, starting April 1st, 2024.
The contract will last until December, 31, 2025, being renewed annually, and with a trial period of 30 days. The contract will be renewed past 2025 depending on further financial support and positive performance review. All the activities to be developed will be subject to confidentiality clauses.
The gross value of the remuneration will be 2.106,00€ (14 months – 29.484,00€/year) and a lunch subsidy of 6,00€ per working day.
