The European farming community welcome today’s decision by the Bern Convention Standing Committee in Strasbourg to advance the proposal to amend the wolf’s appendix status. This amendment is crucial for enabling population management measures for wolves across Europe.
The protection of wolves in the EU since 1992 has seen the return and recolonisation of a species which was on the verge of ruin; but 30 years with proper management including capturing, transportation, and culling only taking place through derogation is not a long-term solution nor in touch with the reality on the ground in many Member States.
However, the unintended consequences of unchecked reintroduction on livestock farmers and rural communities have not been adequately addressed. Copa and Cogeca have long advocated for recognition of the real challenges posed by wolf populations and the urgent need for action. We are glad to see the European Union institutions listening to the needs of farmers and rural dwellers despite the many pressures from those who often don’t have to deal with the consequences of attacks. This decision will provide European livestock farmers with greater peace of mind, as predation remains a constant mental burden that contributes to the fragility of pastoralism in many regions.
We now look forward to the final adoption of this proposal on March 7, 2025, and to working closely with EU institutions on the forthcoming delegated act. This crucial step will formalise these changes, paving the way for truly harmonious coexistence between wolves, livestock farmers, and rural communities across the EU27 and the broader European region.
