IoF2020, SynchroniCity and ACTIVAGE, three H2020 co-funded projects by the European Commission will announce this evening their Open Calls at the opening reception of the IoT Week in Bilbao to increase the impact and scale of their initiatives. More than €9 million is earmarked for an estimated 30 use cases for the three projects. These grants will allow SMEs, start-ups, research organisations and cities among other actors in Europe to turn their inventions into viable products.
IoF2020 open call includes €6m to attract projects with high impact on the supply chain, high level of technical feasibility & innovation as well as a strong economic sustainability allowing new members as well as new regions to join the Internet of Food and Farm community.
SynchroniCity open call grants €3m to IoT-enabled urban services that have already been demonstrated in a relevant environment as well as new cities and other stakeholders to become active participants in the Open & Agile Smart Cities ecosystem.
ACTIVAGE open call worth €600 000 will support experiments that integrate mature IoT technology on ACTIVAGE running deployment sites to increase the value of the current available Active and Healthy Ageing services.
Mechthild Rohen EU Commission (Head of Unit Internet of Things, CONNECT/E4): “In order to ensure Europe makes the most of the IoT challenge ahead, coordinated EU level action is required to achieve an open and scalable IoT ecosystem in Europe and to avoid risks of fragmentation (between member states, industries, etc.). The real value of the large-scale experimentation resides in their integration and openness, and how well the experiments function across different platforms and ecosystems while involving stakeholders from digital sectors as well as from traditional sectors (like farming, cities, manufacturing. etc.). The overall goal is to bring IoT innovation to the market, scale up and create new business opportunities across Europe and beyond”.
The overarching objective is to create a common, mainstream market for IoT services. The 104m€ IoT Large Scale Pilot Programme presents in the more than 9m€ open calls a concrete, standards-based approach to innovation and procurement at scale, with interoperability, replicability and reuse at its foundation.

Background
Set up in 2016 the EU-funded IoT Large-Scale Pilots Programme comprises a total of five innovation consortia, working hand in hand to foster the take up of Internet of Things in industrial sectors in Europe and beyond.
IoF2020 aims to consolidate Europe’s leading position in IoT technology applied to the agri-food sector, maintain its competitiveness and ultimately increase the sustainability by addressing environmental and social challenges.
SynchroniCity aims to create a global market for IoT-enabled urban services where cities and businesses create and trade common digital services to improve the lives of citizens and grow local economies in Europe and beyond.
ACTIVAGE is breaking the barriers for a sustainable and large-scale implementation of technologies for active and healthy ageing. It uses IoT to create smart living environments which contribute to the healthcare systems by extending the time elderly live independently.
