We are excited to invite you to our upcoming webinar that will delve into the New-Genomics Techniques (NGTs). NGTs, or gene editing techniques, are methods for creating targeted mutations (mutagenesis) in the genome of living organisms which could improve food security, nutrition and environmental sustainability.
In December 2023, the EU Council failed to reach agreement on a legislative proposal for genetically modified (GM) crops produced using new genomic techniques (NGTs). The EU Parliament’s Environment Committee (ENVI) gave in mid-January the first green light to new rules for gene-edited plants. The report will be passed to the Parliament plenary scheduled during the 5-8 February 2024 plenary session and if adopted, the Parliament will then be ready to start the inter-institutional negotiations with the Commission and the Council.
NGTs are a very polarizing topic – we want to bring science back to the centre of the debate as well as provide journalists with scientific and policy background for their future reporting on the topic.
Our distinguished speakers will share insights and perspectives on NGTs for use in food production and agriculture and give a short update on legislative/policy developments in the European Union.
