MEPs back rabbit welfare report, but resist new regs

Members of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee this week backed a report encouraging rabbit farmers to phase out conventional battery cages but crucially rejected an amendment calling for new legislation on the issue.

The own-initiative report, tabled by German MEP Stefan Eck, says farmers should move away from cages in favour of healthier but affordable alternatives, such as park or pen farming systems.
