MEP demands urgent response to egg labelling dilemma

Dutch MEP Jan Huitema is pressing the European Commission for an “urgent response” to the problems facing free range egg farmers, with current bird flu restrictions threatening their right to label their products as ‘free range’.

The EU’s 2008 egg marketing regulation states thatfree range labelling on eggs from hens have to be kept indoors on veterinarygrounds but only for a maximum 12 weeks, after which they have to be labelledas ‘barn eggs’.
