EU dairy sector can overcome futures markets barriers – Commission

Futures markets could be very useful for managing price risks in the EU dairy sector, but several obstacles are hindering their expansion, notably the facts that dairy products are not as homogenous as crops, liquidity is widely low and knowledge is lacking in the sector, the European Commission has warned.

Yet many barriers are on the way to being dealt with and cooperatives andproducer organisations could play a “crucial role” by centralising hedging andso reducing the burden for individuals, says Brussels.
