Cereal, sugar price hikes drove up global food price index in January

Representative world prices for cereals, sugar and vegetable oils rose last month, with those for sugar jumping nearly 10% and those for cereals continuing to increase despite ample global supply.

These increases saw the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Food Price Index (FPI) for January reach its highest level in nearly two years, the agency announced today (February 3).
